How does BESS work?

  • To store energy, BESS products need to be charged. Multiple power sources can charge BESS, such as renewables (solar/wind), diesel or gas generator sets, and mains power.

  • BESS products can run solely on their own, powering a site with near-silent power.

  • In more common applications, BESS will be used in conjunction with a generator set and/or renewables. BESS can help maintain engine health, preventing the generator set from running on a non-optimal load.  

When and Where You Need it: Dispatching BESS

When it's time to call upon your energy storage, whether it's to discharge your energy quickly for grid stability or a slower transition from renewable sources to battery, your BESS product can either manually or automatically dispatch power. You can even monitor energy market conditions and avoid energy peak charges. All of this is made possible with our Distributed Energy Resource Management (DERM) software, Cat AMP. Saving $6,000 a month in fuel costs with BESS solution

Caterpillar’s Tucson Proving Ground in Arizona upgraded its decades-old, diesel-powered guard gate with a compact hybrid microgrid system in February 2025. The installation – featuring 58 solar panels, a 24 kW Cat XES60 battery storage unit, and a backup diesel generator – now powers the site efficiently and quietly, saving approximately $6,000 per month in fuel costs.
