EDGE Innovate and Caterpillar Deliver Intelligent Material Handling
To get ahead in the recycling industry, you need to process materials faster and more efficiently. EDGE Innovate is a global leader in designing and manufacturing reliable shredders, screeners, separators and more. EDGE Innovate serves companies in over 70 countries, wherever someone needs efficient and cost-effective material handling and recycling.
The next evolution of shredders
One of the biggest challenges in waste shredding is the wide range of materials processed. EDGE Innovate developed the EDGE VS750s Waste Shredder to process all materials with ease. The VS750s shredder can handle the industry’s toughest waste streams, including green waste, municipal solid waste, construction and demolition waste, biomass and end-of-life tires.
Built for large-scale waste processing, the VS750s isn’t just the biggest shredder EDGE Innovate has ever made—it’s also one of the largest on the market. It was created to meet the demands across the globe for a shredder with more horsepower and capacity. “It’s all about throughput capacity,” says EDGE Innovate Product Development Manager Kevin Kelly. “You’re seeing companies merge and get larger and larger. Organizations needed a machine with higher throughput to meet their targets. The VS750s helps them do that.”
The VS750s was launched in 2026 and has a throughput of 80+ tonnes per hour. It can be customised for different jobs, since the shredding chamber, shafts and loading chamber can be fitted to match applications. “There are different ways to change the output sizes,” says Kelly. “If you want bulkier sized material, you’re going to use fewer knives per shaft in the loading chamber. There’s a good deal of customisation possible.”
Choosing an engine that can increase capacity
Greater capacity requires more power. EDGE Innovate chose the Cat® C18 576kW (772HP) U.S. Tier 4/EU Stage V engine to power the VS750s shredder. The advanced load management system of the Cat C18 engine optimises fuel efficiency for smooth operation under all load conditions. EDGE Innovate needed a versatile engine to handle the range, which is why they use Cat engines on nearly every product line.
“There are going to be serious variations in loads when you’re shredding different types of waste,” says Kelly. “It was crucial to have an engine that can handle those loads. Leveraging Finning’s deep expertise in engines ensures we select the optimal Caterpillar engine for our application, an advantage that not every engine dealer is able to provide.”
The global Cat dealer network is another reason the C18 was a perfect fit. EDGE Innovate will distribute the VS750s across the globe, and the company has relied on Caterpillar’s superior product support for more than 15 years. “Our customers know and trust Caterpillar,” says Kelly, “and that’s one of the main reasons we continue to choose Caterpillar for our engines.”
A relationship built on 15 years of trust
There are many reasons why EDGE Innovate uses Cat engines in most of its equipment. Reliability is at the top of the list, but the company also values Caterpillar’s reputation for quality. “For us, we know that Caterpillar engines will meet our powertrain requirements, but also our customers know that,” says Kelly. “Our customers know Cat engines, and they’re confident the powertrain we’re using is well-established and reliable.”
Finning offers both products and technical support. Caterpillar can assist EDGE Innovate projects with a strong team of application installation engineers who help with the design and specification process. Finning engineers played a major role in the design of the VS750s, increasing the horsepower output of the C18 engine from 563kW to 576kW to suit this application. “If we don’t have the knowledge to get the maximum out of an engine, we’re lost in the water,” says Kelly. “Finning advises us exactly what we should be doing.”
