A partnership carved in stone

Family values, modern tech, and a lasting collaboration with CGT

Tucked in the green hills of Tuscany, near the city of Lucca, Cave Pedogna is a limestone quarrying business that has spent more than half a century carving out success through hard work, innovation, and long-term partnerships.

Founded in 1973, the family-run company is now one of the region’s best-known producers of Calcare limestone. It continues to evolve with the help of technology, dependable machinery, and trusted people.

At the heart of this story is Vittorio Lumini, Cave Pedogna’s co-founder, who built the business with a simple but powerful principle: surround yourself with reliable people and reliable machines. For more than 40 years, that approach has included close collaboration with CGT, the Italian Cat® dealer. Together, the companies have forged a partnership based on trust, consistency, and a shared commitment to quality.

Vittorio’s friendship with Stefano Bastianoni, CGT technician and Cave Pedogna’s dedicated on-site service specialist, perfectly reflects that spirit. The two have worked side by side for years, keeping the quarry’s fleet in top condition. “I’ve been a technician for 50 years,” says Stefano. “For the past 15 years I’ve been dedicated to Cave Pedogna. With today’s connected machines, we can plan interventions in advance and arrive knowing exactly what’s needed.”

Legacy of Progress

Cave Pedogna’s early operations began along the Serchio River, where Vittorio’s first machines, a Cat D8 and D9 dozer, helped extract limestone from the riverbed. In 1990, seeking to expand, the company moved to its current quarry location and invested in larger equipment. After visiting Caterpillar’s Malaga Demonstration and Learning Centre, Vittorio and his team selected a Cat D11 dozer, Cat 990 and 992 wheel loaders, and a Cat 775 rigid dump truck to power the new site.

That investment set the tone for decades of growth. Today, the company runs a fleet of 18 machines, with a new Cat 775 on the way.

The quarry produces around 500,000m³ of limestone annually, operating two quarry faces at elevations up to 530 meters above sea level. Operations run five days a week, moving and processing up to 7,000m³ of material daily.

People, Machines, and Performance

Each stage of production depends on careful coordination between skilled operators and reliable equipment. “The Cat 374 is incredibly responsive and powerful,” says operator Livio Bechelli. “I move around 3,000 m³ of rock a day, and the comfort in the cab makes a big difference.”

Massimo Luschini, who operates a new Cat 992, agrees: “It’s faster, more efficient, and 30–40% lighter on fuel than our previous model. The cab is much more comfortable, and daily checks can be done from the ground. These are small details that have a big impact.”

A Partnership That Stands the Test of Time

Cave Pedogna’s fleet is supported through Customer Value Agreements, which include full maintenance, repairs, and remote monitoring through VisionLink®. These programs help identify ways to boost uptime and efficiency, while dedicated on-site support ensures minimal downtime. “Quality machines, skilled operators, and trusted support, that’s the formula,” says Vittorio. “We believe in long-term relationships. Working with the same people for so many years makes everything smoother.”

As Cave Pedogna enters its next decade, its success continues to rest on the same foundations it was built on 50 years ago: reliability, partnership, and a shared drive to keep moving forward.
