What is Biogas?
Biogas is an economical alternative to fuels like diesel and natural gas. It uses your organic waste sources (municipal solid waste, landfill, manure, wastewater sludge, crop residues) to produce valuable energy. When combined with cogeneration, or a combined heat and power (CHP) solution, you can also provide heating and thermal power to your sites.
This makes biogas a long-term solution to deliver power in a cost-effective way no matter how the energy landscape shifts, while minimizing the impact of accumulated waste.
You Can Trust Cat® Equipment
We understand your goal is to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reach your sustainability goals, but you need to do so in a way that makes economic sense. It’s a challenging task, but biogas could be the answer your business needs.
How Does A Biogas Generator Work?
- Create Biogas:
Biogas is created when organic waste–such as agricultural residue, sewage sludge, or food waste–is broken down by microorganisms in a process called anaerobic digestion.
- Fuel Your Power Assets:
The biogas is then used to fuel a generator set that produces efficient energy for your site(s).
- Enhance Efficiency with CHP:
When the generator sets are running, they produce heat, which is usually wasted by being released into the environment. A CHP solution can capture that heat instead and use its thermal energy for space heating, water heating and drying.
Benefits
Applications
Benefits of Biogas Generator Sets
ENVIRONMENTAL
Using biogas as your energy source can help reduce a site’s total greenhouse gas emissions.
ENERGY
Biogas tends to have a higher reliability rate than other established renewable energy sources e.g. solar PV and wind.
ECONOMIC
Biogas can help lower operational and energy costs and create new revenue streams for wastewater treatment plants and farming. This reduces dependency on the larger electric grid in the case of unplanned power outages.
RESILIENCY
Biogas is often produced and consumed on the same site. This reduces dependency on the larger electric grid in the case of unplanned power outages.
