When Every Second Matters: Protecting Critical Patient Care

Overview

Power Need

The new Vista Pavilion at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon, is a 14-story, 530,000-square-foot expansion supporting advanced cancer treatment and specialized patient care. Because the facility houses critical systems – including patient treatment areas, life safety infrastructure, elevators, and fire pumps – it requires immediate, highly reliable standby power during utility outages.

Solution

The facility is supported by three Cat® 3516C diesel generator sets, each rated at 2 MW, providing a combined 6 MW of standby power capacity. The system automatically transfers the building to backup power in less than 10 seconds, maintaining uninterrupted patient care and meeting stringent hospital code requirements. A 50,000-gallon remote fuel storage system provides at least 96 hours of runtime, while Cat Switchgear enables seamless island-mode operation and advanced control functionality.

Results

OHSU worked closely with Cat dealer Peterson Power Systems and Cat Switchgear specialists throughout the project. The resulting system protects uninterrupted patient care while aligning with OHSU’s broader campus-wide infrastructure strategy, which includes Cat generators operating across approximately 30 buildings.

of

When critical care is on the line, reliability isn’t optional – it’s everything. The new Vista Pavilion at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland depends on a Cat® standby power system engineered to keep lifesaving operations running without interruption, even during severe weather or full utility loss.

Summary

When patient care can't pause, power can't fail. OHSU relies on a dedicated Cat standby power system to help ensure critical services remain operational during outages. The solution supports uninterrupted care, giving healthcare teams confidence that essential operations are protected when every second matters.
