Tesmec began in Italy in the 1950s as a family company designing machinery for stringing power lines. Tesmec has grown into a global leader in trenching equipment, producing customisable trenchers that are effective in all climates and conditions, from the permafrost ground of Siberia to the rocky deserts of Saudi Arabia. 

The Saudi Arabia subsidiary of Tesmec was created in 2010, after a major bulk rock excavation project.

INTRODUCING A REVOLUTIONARY TRENCHER 

Tesmec started developing the 1875XL EVO Chainsaw Trencher in 2022. Released in 2023, it’s an innovative trencher, specialising in deep trenching for large-diameter pipelines. The massive, 160-ton machine can dig trenches up to 732 cm deep and 213 cm wide, surpassing industry standards. Some 1875XL EVO machines are tasked to work around the clock, producing trenches for big oil gas pipelines.

“We have clients who are using our machines up to 24 hours a day,” says Marco Paredi, Trenchers Business Unit Director. “Our trenchers need to be reliable because they lead the productivity of all other equipment on the jobsite. That’s why the Tesmec team is always available to our clients on-site to organise parts needed, train operators and provide logistics.”

PROVIDING BIGGER SOLUTIONS FOR A GROWING INDUSTRY

In the trenching industry, there is high demand for bigger and more powerful machines. The Tesmec 1875XL EVO Chainsaw Trencher is the largest and most powerful in its class, so it requires a powerful engine to achieve the necessary 950 HP for efficient operation. The Cat® C32 EPA Tier 4 Final engine meets the power and reliability needs of the 1875XL EVO. Marco Paredi, Trencher Business Unit Director says, “If we have an engine that’s not performing, then it would be recognised as a Tesmec failure because our name is on the machine. That’s why we choose Caterpillar engines.”

SUPPORTING A GLOBAL COMPANY ACROSS SEVEN CONTINENTS

The size and scope of the Cat C32 engine made it the logical choice for the Tesmec 1875XL EVO Trencher, but the benefits of working with Caterpillar go beyond power. Tesmec relies on the service of its Cat Dealer, CGT, for support before, after and during jobs. “We’ve had a great experience with the global support from Caterpillar for sure,” 

says Paredi. Flavio Villa, Chief Technology Officer of the Trencher Business Unit, adds, “We were impressed with their speed and service. CGT always has the parts for engines whenever we need them.” CGT was also instrumental during the development of the engine installation for the 1875XL EVO Trencher. Through remote meetings with CGT engineers, Tesmec was able to clarify doubts and evaluate decisions. CGT engineers led the validation of the engine installation project and attended the validation of the prototype engine installation, where the machine was run at 100% load factor at the brake bench.

BREAKING NEW GROUND IN SUSTAINABILITY

Electrification and sustainability can be difficult when dealing with the machine sizes and ground conditions in trenching, but Tesmec is leading the charge in the industry. Tesmec has launched the very first electric trencher in the world. “That’s a big milestone for our company towards sustainability,” says Villa. “Electrification is something we’ve been striving to reach for years now.” 

• Building on the legacy of the C32, the C32B features strengthened performance critical components like cylinder head, block, crankshaft, pistons, rods, and main bearings. Its simple, maintenance free diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) aftertreatment meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V, and other equivalent emissions standards.
• C32B engines have excellent power density with a peak U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final certified rating of 895 kW (1200 hp) and 839 kW (1125 hp) for EU Stage V. Its U.S. EPA Tier 2 equivalent version offers a peak rating of 1007 kW (1350 hp).
• The C32B uses a dual-can diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) aftertreatment. This maintenance-free, passive aftertreatment solution eliminates the need for thermal management or regeneration. The C32B does not require diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), helping minimize total fluid consumption and eliminating the need for any DEF infrastructure (DEF tank, DEF pump, heated DEF lines, additional electronics, and DEF storage on the jobsite). DOC-only simplifies the aftertreatment solution, helps minimize overall package size, and reduces operation costs.
• The C32B boasts strength from the inside out. Weighing approximately 50 kg (110 lb) more than its predecessor, the C32B's performance critical components have been strengthened and upgraded to help extend time between rebuilds.
