1. What Is Behind-The-Meter Power Generation?
Behind-the-meter power systems generate electricity directly at a customer’s facility to reduce reliance on grid power and manage energy costs.
Power Need
Manufacturing facilities often face rising electricity costs and fluctuating peak demand charges. Linamar Corporation needed a way to stabilize long-term energy costs while maintaining reliable power across its manufacturing operations in Ontario, Canada.
Solution
Working with Caterpillar and Alectra Energy Solutions, Linamar installed a behind-the-meter power generation system using 12 Cat® G3500 series natural gas generator sets. The system is integrated with Caterpillar’s Active Management Platform (Cat AMP) distributed energy resource management software to monitor energy demand and dispatch energy during periods of peak grid demand.
Results
The solution enables Linamar to reduce energy costs during peak grid demand while maintaining reliable on-site power generation. By combining Cat generator technology with advanced energy management software, the system improves operational efficiency and supports Linamar’s long-term sustainability and cost management goals.
