Cat® Transmission Filter Replacement
Estimated read time: 2 minutes
Replacing your transmission oil filter is essential to maintaining your machine’s productivity and efficiency. A clean filter helps keep your transmission oil free from contaminants that can cause wear and reduce performance.
Regular replacement protects key components, supports smoother shifting and helps extend the life of your equipment.
In the video below, we’re working on a Cat® 440 Backhoe Loader, but the process will be similar on other equipment. For specific instructions, consult your Cat dealer or your Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM).
Always park your machine on a flat surface when performing maintenance, and make sure the engine is shut off.
Remove the Old Filter
The transmission filter is located on the left side of the machine. Use a strap-type wrench to remove it.
Next, use a lint-free rag to wipe off the filter element mounting base. If any part of the gasket remains on the base, remove it.
Install The New Filter
Before installing the new filter, apply a light coat of oil to the filter gasket. Then install the new filter by hand. Filter installation instructions are printed on the side of every filter.
Inspect It
After installing the new filter, start the engine and apply the service brake. Slowly operate the transmission controls so the oil begins to circulate.
After a short time, put the transmission control lever into neutral and engage the parking brake. Now, inspect for leaks and check oil levels.
Q: Where is the transmission filter on a Cat backhoe loader?
A: On most Cat backhoe loaders, including the Cat 440, the transmission filter is located on the left side of the machine.
Q: What tools do I need to change a Cat transmission filter?
A: A strap-type wrench, a lint-free rag and fresh transmission oil for the gasket are typically all you need.
Q: Do I need to drain the oil when replacing a Cat transmission filter?
A: No. The filter can be replaced without draining the oil, but you should always check oil levels after installation.
Q: How do I know if the new Cat transmission filter is installed correctly?
A: Follow the installation instructions printed on the filter. After starting the engine and circulating the oil, inspect for leaks and confirm oil levels are correct.
Q: How often should I replace my Cat transmission filter?
A: Replacement intervals vary by model and working conditions. Always refer to your Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct service schedule.
