Mike Sposato serves as General Counsel and Secretary of Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation and has responsibility for managing the legal affairs of all entities within Caterpillar Financial Products Division, including Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation, Caterpillar Insurance Services Corporation, and their affiliates.
Mike joined Caterpillar in 1994 and has held various positions within its Legal Services Division. Mike started in San Diego, California supporting a subsidiary that manufactures and sells gas turbines. His subsequent positions included running a legal office in Belgium to support this subsidiary’s operations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East from 1996 until 2000 and then moving to Nashville, Tennessee to support Caterpillar’s Financial Products Division until 2002. Mike relocated in 2002 to England where he managed the Caterpillar U.K. Legal Services Group, then returned to Nashville in 2005 as General Counsel for the Financial Products Division. In 2011, Mike relocated to Caterpillar headquarters in Peoria, Illinois, to assume leadership of the Commercial Section of the Legal Services Division. In this role Mike had responsibility for more than 90 legal professionals who deliver services to support all the commercial legal activity for Caterpillar’s machine business units in the Americas as well as Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Mike’s responsibilities changed in 2017 and 2018 to lead groups assigned to worldwide distribution and to focused support for Resource Industries and Construction Industries business units respectively.
Mike led the development of Caterpillar’s pro bono program in 2006, forming two 6 Sigma teams to develop and deploy an approach to pro bono. He participates in the program through working on individual matters as well as through active involvement on the program’s steering committee. Caterpillar’s program has been recognized by the Pro Bono Institute, the Association of Corporate Counsel, the American Bar Association, the Illinois Bar Association and the Tennessee Bar Association, among other organizations. Mike has personally received recognition for his efforts from both the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands and the Tennessee Bar Association.
Mike received a Bachelor of Science degree in Foreign Service magna cum laude from Georgetown University and he received his juris doctor with honors from Georgetown University Law Center where he was an editor of Law and Policy in International Business. Mike practiced law with Ballard Spahr LLP in Philadelphia for five years prior to joining Caterpillar.
