In Sydney, NSW, Sage Civil Australia has been paving the way for women in the construction industry for over twelve years. Founded in 2014 by Asha Russell, Sage Civil was born from her vision to build an inclusive company—one where diversity is not just welcomed but actively woven into the foundation of the business.
Asha built Sage Civil from the ground up—starting with nothing but the shell of a Cat® D6 Dozer. “It’s all I could afford…I worked really hard for about 12 months to build the dozer into a workable state.”
She was no stranger to the work required to succeed in the earthmoving space—her family owned an earthmoving business while she was growing up and her dad worked as a diesel mechanic. “We were back and forth, as children, going to Caterpillar to pick up parts,” she recalled. “I guess it was just ingrained that this was probably going to happen.”
Nearly 12 years later, Asha has built Sage Civil into a thriving earthmoving company, and she prides herself on training the next generation of industry professionals, especially young women looking to enter the industry.
Through training programs and apprenticeships, Sage Civil gives individuals with no previous experience a chance to build a career as operators. Asha says the best part of her job is seeing those young people go from having no operating experience to operating multiple machines like pros. “By the time they're either finished here at Sage Civil, or even while they’re still with us, they might know how to operate three or four machines. Watching people's lives change is really what gets me.”
When you walk onto a Sage Civil job site, something about the equipment immediately stands out: it’s pink.
"You rock up on site and you've got Cat equipment—and pink? It's a flex,” Asha told us proudly. “I think everyone in the industry knows Cat equipment is the best. And here I am today. I’ve had over 50 machines, mostly Cat."
But Sage Civil’s pink equipment is more than just a color — it’s a statement. It represents the team’s commitment to inclusion and breaking industry norms. “There’s been such an increase in women entering the industry. It’s happening. It’s really happening,” Asha said. “For me, being part of a legacy you can look back on and know you contributed to something really big for women is just amazing.”
From breaking ground to breaking barriers, it’s undeniable that Asha has made a splash in the industry. And as the operators she’s trained continue to build their careers, her impact on the industry will grow beyond Sage Civil alone. If, in a few years, a female operator from Australia joins your team, you might just have Asha to thank for training her.
